What is CBN and why is it growing in popularity? Product tips for your customers

What is CBN?

CBN (cannabinol) is one of the ten primary phytocannabinoids present in cannabis, alongside more familiar compounds such as THC and CBD. It is a cannabinoid with minimal, and according to some sources even no, psychoactive effects - its psychotropic effect is up to ten times weaker than that of THC.

Cannabinoids are biologically active compounds that play a key role in the therapeutic properties of cannabis. While most of these compounds are formed naturally in the plant, CBN is produced secondarily as a degradation product of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Its formation occurs as a result of oxidative processes or heat, when THC gradually breaks down into CBN. In freshly harvested cannabis, the CBN content is negligible, usually less than 1 % in the raw plant material. However, older or improperly stored hemp may have higher concentrations of CBN.

CBN for better sleep

CBN is very often mentioned as a possible natural alternative to promote sleep. Although scientific studies on its sedative effects are still limited, many users report that it helps them fall asleep faster and experience deeper sleep.

CBN was first thought to be a on its ownpowerful sedative, but current research suggests that its effects may be more pronounced when combined with other cannabis constituents. This so-called additive effect means that the combination of cannabinoids and terpenes produces stronger effects than either compound alone.

The combination of also seems promising CBN with melatonin, as it is thought to naturally promote circadian rhythms and facilitate falling asleep.

Part of the reason why CBN is associated with sleep may be because it is formed by the natural aging of cannabis. When the plant is exposed to air,  is converted THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid)into CBN. Many users have noticed that older cannabis often induces drowsiness, leading to the assumption that CBN is behind this effect.

However, some experts point out that the real reason may be more likely changes in the terpene content, such as linalool, cedrol or caryophyllene, which change naturally as the plant ages. These terpenes are known for their relaxing effects and may contribute significantly to the sedative properties of cannabis.

CBN shows promising potential not only in sleep, but also in pain relief, inflammation control or lowering intraocular pressure.

Let's take a closer look at its other potential benefits.

What are the effects of CBN?

CBN affects the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the human body primarily by interacting with CB2 receptors, which regulate immune function, and to a lesser extent with CB1 receptors in the brain and nervous system. The exact mechanism of its binding is not yet fully understood, but it is thought to have a higher affinity for CB2 receptors.

In addition, it acts as an agonist of the TRPV2 receptor, which plays a key role in the immune response.

It is thanks to these properties that CBN can potentially influence various processes in the body.

CBN and eye health

Animal studies have shown that long-term administration of CBN can significantly reduce intraocular pressure, which is one of the main risk factors for glaucoma. However, the efficacy of CBN is not yet superior to standard glaucoma medications and further research is needed in this area.

Anti-inflammatory CBN

Reputable studies have shown the anti-inflammatory effects of cannabinoids, especially CBD and THC. According to research, CBN also has anti-inflammatory potential and could become part of a new generation of therapeutic agents aimed at treating inflammatory diseases such as allergic asthma.

In addition, an animal study showed that CBN could potentially be an effective treatment for arthritis.

CBN and protection of the nervous system

Based on scientific evidence, CBN appears to be a promising substance with anticonvulsant and neuroprotective properties. Like CBD, which is part of an approved epilepsy drug, CBN may help with seizures, especially when combined with THC and CBD, where it achieves better results than isolated compounds.

In addition, studies suggest that CBN may protect nerve cells and slow the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. For example, research in a model of rodent found that CBN treatment amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) delayed the onset of the disease more than two weeks.

In the future, CBN could provide a treatment option for neurological disorders for which there is no effective therapy yet.

Antibacterial effect of CBN

CBN, like other cannabinoids, appears to be a compound with significant antibacterial properties. A  study 2008investigated the efficacy of cannabinoids against antibiotic-resistant bacteria and found that CBN showed strong activity against several strains of methicillin-resistant (MRSAgolden staphylococcus aureus ). This suggests the potential of CBN as an effective tool in the fight against antibiotic resistance.

Analgesic effects of CBN

CBN has been found to promote neuropeptide release and help relax blood vessels, which affects sensory nerves and may contribute to pain relief. Unlike CBD and THC, it acts by a different mechanism and acts as a weak partial agonist of the CB1 receptor.

Although its analgesic effect is weaker than that of THC, it is an interesting alternative for natural pain control.

CBN and increased appetite

A experiment 2012 animal suggests that CBN may act as an appetite stimulant and provide a non-psychotropic alternative to THC. The study showed that CBN in rats increased the amount of food ingested and prolonged feeding time.

These properties could make CBN useful where an appetite boost without the psychotropic effects of THC is desired.

Possible risks and side effects of CBN

Although is CBN generally considered safe, in higher doses or in combination with other substances, it can cause certain side effects.

The most common side effects include:

  • Drowsiness and fatigue
  • Light dizziness
  • Dry mouth and dehydration
  • Low blood pressure

CBN can also interfere with the metabolism of some drugs, especially those that are processed by the liver - similar to CBD. We recommend that customers are advised that if they are taking these types of medications, they should consult before using CBNa physician.

These are for example:

  • sleeping pills and sedatives
  • medications for blood pressure, heart rhythm and blood thinning
  • analgesics
  • antibiotics and antimicrobials
  • corticosteroids
  • antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs
  • cholesterol medication
  • Immunosuppressants
  • drugs for erectile dysfunction
  • drugs for prostate
  • antiepileptic drugs (AEDs)
  • antihistamines (allergy medicines)

CBN is still subject to early research and its effects may vary between individuals.

As there are not yet sufficient studies on the safety of CBN, use is not recommended for pregnant and lactating women, children and people with chronic diseases.

Conclusion

CBN (cannabinol) is one of the primary phytocannabinoids in cannabis, produced by the degradation of THC, with minimal psychoactive effects. Although large-scale studies are still lacking, early research and user experiences suggest that it could be an effective and natural alternative to conventional sleep aid supplements. In addition, it shows potential in the areas of pain relief, anti-inflammatory effects, nervous system protection, lowering intraocular pressure and appetite stimulation.

Available products include CBN oils and drops, low-THC cannabis flowers and disposable vaporizer pens.
