Quality assurance of CBD oil: How and where to store?

Optimal storage of CBD oil: Preserve its quality

Knowing how and where to properly store CBD oil is key to maintaining product efficacy and effectiveness. Improper placement could lead to a decrease in cannabinoid concentration and compromise the therapeutic and relaxing properties of the product. Customers could claim your goods or even contact other retailers.

CBD oils, like other natural products, require certain storage conditions to ensure that all the ingredients, including the active ingredients, remain intact and the quality of the oil is maintained. Natural products are very sensitive to direct sunlight.

Start by buying CBD oils in dark glass bottles that provide UV protection. This is because it will best protect hemp products from biophotonic activity and harmful light, one of the main destroyers of the active ingredients in the oil. You can bet on special purple glass, which will ensure a longer shelf life and safe preservation of natural products (flowers, herbs, concentrates and oils).

Tip: In our offer you will find Miron airtight containers made of this special purple glass.

Tips for proper storage of CBD oil

Below you will find a brief overview of how and where to store natural products.

Tips for proper storage of CBD oil

Description

Store products in a cool, shady place, away from light

Store CBD oils in an environment between 2-12°C or at room temperature and do not expose them to direct sunlight.

Choose appropriate packaging

Use airtight glass containers made of dark glass. Vacuum caps or special packaging protect against heat, light, air and moisture.

Protect from moisture

Store products in a dry place, avoid humid environments. Moisture can cause mould and deteriorate the oil components.

Take storage time into account

Check the production and delivery dates of CBD oil. CBD oil has a limited shelf life.

Where to store CBD oil?

Always store your products in a cool shady place, away from light and heat. The infrared and ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun's rays can negatively affect CBD stem cells and cause the substances to degrade, causing the cannabinoids to lose their potency. Natural products naturally degrade over time, this cannot be completely prevented. Keep track of the production dates of the oils and market them to your customers accordingly.

Cooler temperatures help protect important terpenes and cannabinoids. Ensure your products have a humidity-free location/storage to avoid mould. Excessive moisture leads to faster breakdown of substances in the oil.

When ordering new CBD oils, purchase products in glass bottles. Glass bottles are definitely better than plastic, as plastic can react with the contents and cause unwanted chemical reactions that will cause the active ingredients to break down and render the oil ineffective.

Glass containers with tight-fitting lids provide ideal conditions for long-term preservation of product quality. Glass protects the oil from the effects of light, heat and moisture.

Composition of the product

Several factors play a role in the storage of CBD oil, namely the composition of the oil, the extraction methods used and the packaging.

If vitamins are added to the product, each has an expiry date. However, most vitamins retain their effectiveness for 1-2 years, after which time they lose their effects, but they are neither dangerous nor toxic.

Herbal ingredients, melatonin and flavors also have an expiration date, and these ingredients often last longer than CBD oil itself and do not affect the estimated shelf life of the product.

The purer the CBD oil, the longer its estimated shelf life. There are different types of CBD oils on the market. CBD isolates generally have the longest shelf life. Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum products retain more plant material or compounds, but with a shorter shelf life.

Carbon dioxide extraction methods provide a purer form of CBD. Products obtained in this way have a longer shelf life. Ethanol extraction preserves many of the plant compounds contained in hemp, but the products have a shorter shelf life.

CBD oil manufacturers use a variety of carrier oils (usually in the form of vegetable oil or vegetable glycerin), with some combining multiple carrier oils in the same product to create a unique blend. These oils are used during blending and consist of triglycerides. Triglycerides are formed when three fatty acids and glycerol are combined. The oils have different triglyceride profiles that determine the ideal carrier for CBD.

The oils used are palm, MCT, coconut, olive, sesame, hemp seed, avocado and grapeseed. Each has its pros and cons. MCT oil (medium chain triglyceride oil) is the most commonly used carrier oil for hemp oils and has the longest shelf life compared to other carrier oils.

Table of examples of carriers in CBD oil and their shelf life

Carrier oil

Durability

Olive

16–20 months

Hemp

max. 6 months

Avocado

1– 2 years

MCT oil (coconut, palm)

2 years and more

As you can see from the table, MCT oil has the longest shelf life, with coconut oil being the better option, it binds CBD well and has a longer shelf life than palm oil.
