HHC, HHC-O, HHC-P: What is the power of the new cannabinoids and how to offer them to customers?

Origin and availability of HHC

Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) is no longer a complete newcomer and is gaining ground in the market, despite the fact that it is a relatively controversial substance whose availability may be restricted by legislation in the coming weeks or months.

HHC can be produced by hydrogenation of THC from the delta 8, delta 9 and delta 10 isomers of THC. However, it is currently produced semi-synthetically from other cannabinoids, such as CBD. The starting material is always a hemp product (industrial hemp) containing up to the permitted limit of 1 % THC (in practice, hemp containing up to 0,3 % THC is usually used).

HHC also occurs naturally in the cannabis plant, but in such small quantities that commercial extraction would be uneconomical.

What do we know about HHC-O?

HHC-O is a newly discovered cannabinoid that does not occur naturally in the cannabis plant and is therefore produced in the laboratory by a chemical reaction called acylation. In this reaction, an acyl group (denoted by the letter "O") is added to hexahydrocannabinol.

This process enhances the potency of the cannabinoid, which, among other things, has been shown by users to produce more intense intoxicating effects. These effects are usually present after a few minutes but last longer than in the case of HHC.

Extra strong HHC-P

Like HHC-O, HHC-P (hexahydrocannabiphorol) is produced synthetically and is not found in the cannabis plant. It is similar in structure to HHC but has a onger alkyl chain enriched with carbon molecules.

We do not yet have enough information on HHC-P, but it is said to be the most potent cannabinoid. HHC-P has the potential to induce euphoria and be highly psychoactive. The effects usually take 30-45 minutes to take effect and can persist for several hours.

It is important to note that the effect that HHC, HHC-O and HHC-P produce is highly individual and it is not possible to recommend a standardised dose. Many factors influence the response, such as gender, age, body composition and the way the body metabolizes these substances.

The potential of HHC, HHC-O and HHC-P

We do not yet have studies to confirm or refute the effects of HHC, HHC-O and HHC-P reported by consumers. Thus, it is only possible to draw on experience and the similar structure of other better-studied cannabinoids and their derivatives.

It is known that the human body contains cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, through which processes in the endocannabinoid system are regulated. The endocannabinoid system is involved in maintaining homeostasis and influences many important functions of the body, such as the immune response, digestion, memory and pain perception. The cannabinoids HHC, HHC-O and HHC-P bind to CB1 and CB2 receptors and can thus influence the above processes. Consumers seek these substances in particular when they need them:

  • stimulate, stimulate, improve mood
  • relieve pain
  • relieve stress and tension
  • improve falling asleep and staying asleep

Let us now leave aside the cases where the motive for using HHC and derived compounds is to achieve a 'drugged state' and to induce psychoactive effects. Such use is by no means endorsed or recommended, but these users should not be completely ignored as they represent a significant group of (potential) customers.

Which HHC, HHC-O and HHC-P products to include in the range?

The HHC range consists of vapes, cartridges, HHC flowers, gummies, HHC oils and drops, hash, distillate, and the hot new product is pre-rolls (cannabis cigarettes).

In the case of HHC-O and HHC-P products, vape pens, cartridges and flowers are the most popular with consumers. These can be offered to customers in different concentrations and flavours with terpenes from different varieties with permitted THC levels. In most of these products, HHC is the most abundant, followed by HHC-O or HHC-P, or both. Vape foams often contain other known cannabinoids such as CBD, CBG and CBN.

HHC flowers are CBD-rich technical hemp flowers enriched with hexahydrocannabinol distillate (HHC, possibly HHC-O and HHC-P).

How to meet the needs of customers looking for HHC, HHC-O and HHC-P?

Customers may have many reasons for seeking out HHC products and other new cannabinoids. Curiosity may play a role, but also an interest in the therapeutic potential and the search for solutions to a variety of problems such as stress, pain or sleep difficulties. HHC-O and HHC-P in particular attract attention because of the intensity and duration of their effects.

There are a few principles that you should follow, not only when selling HHC products:

  • Pay attention to the customer: Focus on their needs and motivation to buy. It is important that you have sufficient information about HHC products, are able to advise the customer and warn them about possible side effects and risks associated with the use of HHC, HHC-O and HHC-P.
  • Marketing or be visible: Use available and permitted offline marketing opportunities (billboards, magazines, trade fairs); communicate with customers on the internet via blog, newsletter or social networks.
  • Differentiate yourself from the competition: Emphasize how your HHC products are unique and inform about new products.
  • Trust and quality: Be concerned about product quality and safety and only buy HHC, HHC-O and HHC-P from proven and reliable suppliers. Verify that the products have been tested by an independent laboratory. This is the only way to ensure the safety, purity and quality of the goods offered and to gain customer trust.
  • Expand your product range: Your offer can be more interesting if you add products containing HHC-O and HHC-P.

Summary

The popularity of HHC, HHC-O and HHC-P with customers is growing steadily, despite legislative mistrust and lack of scientific research. Both HHC-O and HHC-P are compounds similar to HHC, but have more intense effects. HHC-P is considered to be the most potent cannabinoid and its effects can last for several hours. Vape foams, cartridges and flowers are currently among the most popular products containing HHC-O and HHC-P.

Take an interest in your customers' motivations and needs, expand your offerings, and ensure the safe origin and purity of the products you offer. Also be sure to keep up to date with the latest changes in laws and regulations regarding the use, sale and distribution of new cannabinoids.
