CBD cosmetics: Why is it so popular and what is its potential?
Current state of the CBD cosmetics market
Consumers who are increasingly health-conscious while thinking about the environmental impact of their choices on the planet are creating a demand for environmentally friendly and effective beauty products. As a result, there is a growing interest in innovative natural cosmetics. CBD, the non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant, is gaining more and more attention due to its therapeutic properties and wide range of uses in health care. This is spurring further research and revealing new ways to use CBD effectively in cosmetics.
According to Technavio, the CBD cosmetics market size is forecast to grow at a CAGR of $5.02 billion between 2023 and 2028. If the market grows at the same rate, this will equate to an average growth rate of 38.64% per year. Major global manufacturers are not slowing down and incorporating CBD into their product lines: last year, for example, Sephora and The Body Shop did so.
Research shows that emerging collaborations between manufacturers are contributing significantly to market growth. Through strategic alliances, companies gain access to new products, technologies and resources, allowing them to expand their offerings, geographical reach and distribution channels.
An article published in the scientific publication Dialogues in clinical neuroscience points out that the main problem of the market is the lack of regulation and the emergence of unauthorised products with different amounts of active substances without evidence of their safety and efficacy, with inaccurate or even misleading information on the packaging. A related issue is the emergence and easy availability of counterfeit products that mimic the packaging of reputable brands and are sold at lower prices, especially through internet sales and unverified distributors in price-sensitive markets such as China and India. These products can damage the reputation of genuine brands and the overall perception of the effectiveness of CBD in cosmetics.
The best hemp cosmetics
For a long time, the most popular products with CBD are the oils. With $148.9 million in 2018, they accounted for roughly half of the market value, followed by moisturizers and skin cleansers, masks, serums and body lotions, according to a Technavio report.
According to research by Future Market Insights, the CBD creams segment held a 12.4% share of the global market in 2023. The research also states that products in pump packs were the most popular, likely because they are hygienic (no risk of contaminating the product with bacteria from hands when applied) and easy to dispense.
Within our product range, the Bione, Palacio and Alpa brands are particularly popular among customers. These are Czech brands with a long tradition and simple composition. The best-selling products include balms, ointments and massage gels, hair products and toothpastes.
The potential of CBD in cosmetics
Although research into the effects of CBD in cosmetics is just beginning, early studies suggest promising potential. So far, tests have not shown that CBD causes irritation or allergic reactions. A number of studies show that CBD can relieve pain and inflammation and suggest that it could have a number of other positive effects.
Facial cosmetics
A 2020 study looking at the therapeutic potential of CBD on skin health and its effect on skin diseases suggests that CBD could be effective in skin cosmetics, particularly for its ability to regulate the skin's defence mechanisms against oxidative stress. Oxidative stress causes cell damage and can lead to chronic inflammation if not controlled. It is also associated with skin disorders and skin aging.
Hence, it follows that CBD creams could be beneficial in skin care and help treat acne, strengthen the skin barrier and reduce the signs of aging. At our online store, we offer CBD creams for all skin types from young problematic skin to aging and tired skin. We sell products for day and night use, all-purpose moisturizers, ointments, soothing creams, acne and psoriasis treatments, and wrinkle reducing creams.
Hair preparations
Although there is no rigorous study demonstrating the positive effects of CBD on hair, we do know that the hair follicle contains endocannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, which are part of the endocannabinoid system, a complex cellular system that regulates various physiological processes. These receptors interact with cannabinoids such as CBD. Research has shown that cannabinoids are deposited in hair fibres after consumption of hemp products or their topical application, and therefore, taking into account the potential effects of CBD on the skin, we can expect that CBD may also be effective in the treatment of scalp diseases and could help with hair loss or hair growth problems.
Our range includes CBD and hemp shampoos, conditioners, masks, hemp tinctures and CBD oils. We sell products for regeneration, oily hair, anti-dandruff and psoriasis treatment. Top sellers among our customers include Bione hair lotion and Palacio hemp shampoo.
CBD in balms, ointments and gels
Studies suggest that in neuropathy and inflammation, cannabinoids effectively reduce pain and minimize negative side effects associated with the central nervous system, such as respiratory depression, sedation, and tolerance.
In our e-shop we offer lubrication for joints, muscles and tendons, for varicose vein problems and for the treatment of a wide range of skin diseases such as eczema, atopy, psoriasis, mycoses and fungi. Hemp balms, ointments and gels are a popular first aid treatment for injuries, burns and diaper rash. They are also used in massages and as a recovery treatment after sports activities. The preparations can have both a warming and cooling effect. Popular products among buyers include Palacio Forte CBD massage gel or Alpa hemp balm.
CBD and oral hygiene
Research on the therapeutic potential of CBD for skin health and its effect on skin diseases also suggests that cannabinoids are more effective at reducing bacteria in dental plaque compared to commercially available synthetic oral hygiene products, and thus have the potential to be an effective ingredient in dental hygiene products.
In our e-shop we offer toothpastes, mouthwashes and chewing gums.
Conclusion
Consumer interest in CBD products continues to grow and leading cosmetic manufacturers such as Sephora and The Body Shop are incorporating CBD products into their product lines. The market for CBD cosmetics is set to grow by tens of percent in the coming years, mainly due to more detailed studies, collaboration between manufacturers and the emergence of more thorough legislation.
Although more research is still needed on the effects of CBD in cosmetics, the results so far show its potential especially in skin care products, creams, ointments and gels. Cannabidiol has possible anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive (pain-reducing) effects, as well as the ability to reduce oxidative stress, which has a negative impact on skin health. Its use in scalp and hair care also seems promising. Current studies confirm the ability of cannabidiol to reduce dental plaque, making CBD an innovative natural ingredient in oral care products.
